Drivers in New York who get involved in serious car crashes have a high likelihood of suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Though these injuries can vary in severity, the most damaging ones can have lasting repercussions on your life.

Depending on which area of the brain the impact injures, TBIs can affect your memory, personality and physical health. As far as your health goes, many TBI sufferers also suffer from chronic nerve pains or headaches. Nerve pain can originate in the brain and extend anywhere. Neck, shoulder and back pain is most common. Some sufferers also experience pain in the hands, arms, or torso. A rare few may even experience leg and foot pain. Headaches can come in the form of consistent, intense migraines.

Memory problems also come in a wide variety. Some people may suffer from long-term memory loss. Others may suffer from short-term memory loss, but only temporarily. For many severe TBI sufferers, their memory is permanently altered. They have to make life changes to adapt to their new disability and rework their way through the world.

A TBI can also impact your personality. For example, damage to the frontal cortex may lower a person’s inhibitions. They may be more likely to lash out and prone to bursts of anger. They can also be incapable of stopping themselves from acting out.
