What happens if your whiplash goes untreated?

On Behalf of | Jul 7, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

One of the most common injuries from car accidents is whiplash. Even in a minor crash, the sudden movement of your neck snapping back and forth can cause whiplash and leave you dealing with discomfort.

Even though it may seem like a relatively minor injury that will correct itself, not getting adequate help can cause worsening symptoms. If left untreated, whiplash could cause chronic head and neck pain.

Knowing the symptoms

Unlike more obvious injuries, you may not recognize whiplash right away. Depending on the circumstances of your accident, you may not start to feel pain until a few days after your car accident. Persistent pain in your head or neck may mean more serious problems. According to The Mayo Clinic, symptoms of whiplash may include the following:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Neck stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability

Getting help

Even if you feel okay after a car accident, getting medical help can rule out any unseen injuries you may not know about. Many times, the treatment for whiplash is simple. Your doctor may suggest you wear a neck brace to provide stability as the muscles in your neck recover. Other solutions including chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture may also help to provide some relief.

Untreated whiplash can cause pain to extend to your arms. You may experience a limited range of motion which could impact your ability to work and do things you enjoy. Loss of sensation, depression and memory loss may also happen as the result of an untreated head or neck injury. Prompt treatment for whiplash can give your body the resources it needs to make a swift and full recovery.
