Will new law improve high rate of construction accidents in NYC?

New York is a city that is always rebuilding itself - literally. There is construction going on in all of the boroughs year-round. The construction industry offers many New York City residents an opportunity to make good money - but at a price.

Construction site accidents can take deadly toll

Construction workers in New York can face daily dangers on the job. Whether digging deep tunnels underground or constructing the newest towering building, construction work often involves heavy materials, complex machinery and unfinished structures. These inherent dangers can be greatly intensified when defective equipment is used or when a contractor violates safety standards in the workplace. Across the board, construction fatalities show a rising trend; from 2011 to 2015, the number of workers killed in construction accidents rose 26 percent.

Construction accidents kill 2 men on same day

On September 21, two fatal construction accidents occurred just hours apart in New York, prompting local officials to think of new ways to keep its workers safe. The City Council is considering a bill requiring construction workers to attend safety training and apprenticeship programs.
