3 injured in New York chain-reaction crash

A young child was among three people injured in a three-car accident on Aug. 2. The accident occurred in the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway in Islandia at about 5:30 p.m.

Suffolk Police said that the 2-year-old child was a passenger in a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by his father, a 28-year-old resident of Medford. Their vehicle rear-ended a 2017 Ford Escape occupied by a woman and a man, whose identities were undisclosed. The force of the impact caused the Escape to strike a 2017 Hyundai Sonata carrying two people.

The female driver of the Escape suffered serious injuries in the crash. The father and child in the minivan suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency personnel transported the injured woman by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where the 28-year-old man and the child were also taken by ambulance. The driver of the Sonata, a 46-year-old Bay Shore woman, and her unidentified male passenger were not hurt.

Crews that responded to the accident impounded the three vehicles involved in order to examine them. None of the drivers involved faced criminal charges in connection with the crash. Police requested that anyone with information about the accident contact law enforcement.

Victims who suffer serious injuries in motor vehicle accidents often need long-term treatment before they can resume their normal lives. The medical bills, lost wages and other damages arising from negligent drivers' actions burden injured people and their families. Even in cases where liability seems clear, insurance companies may deny a claim or may offer settlements that do not cover the injured person's expenses. Personal injury attorneys often take over negotiations with insurance companies and may be able to recover higher settlements that better suit their clients' needs.
